Southampton vs Liverpool Preview

Southampton vs Liverpool Preview:

Possible starting lineups:

Liverpool:

Southampton will welcome Liverpool to St Mary's in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Southampton are last on the table with just five points from the opening 16 matches. The situation is critical and there is no space for calculations. The last week was very much eventful for the Saints. They suffered a heavy 5:0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. The fans were angry with the high defeat and with the bad performance of their players, so those who stayed until the last whistle (many left the stadium) asked for managerial change. The club officials reacted promptly and sacked Russell Martin, with Simon Rusk taking interim charge for unspecified period. However, there is a reason why Southampton conceded five goals on Sunday. It is connect with the injury situation. Aaron Ramsdale, Will Smallbone, Juan Larios, Ross Stewart and Gavin Bazunu are all struggling with injuries. Some of them played against Tottenham, but could be wise to skip the cup fixture against the leaders. Jack Stephens will serve the final game of his three-match ban after being sent off against Chelsea,

Liverpool are still leaders in the Premier League, but now have only two-point advantage. The Reds failed to beat Newcastle, playing a 3:3 draw at St James Park. Next, the Merseyside derby was postponed due to weather conditions, while on Saturday Liverpool dropped another two points. This time they failed to beat Fulham, playing a 2:2 draw. The start of the match wasn't as expected, the Cottagers scored an early goal. But then the things went from bad to worse. Left-back Andy Robertson was sent off for a last-man foul on Harry Wilson. Fulham had a golden opportunity to record a rare Anfield victory, however the Reds equalized. Once again Fulham took the advantage in the finish of the match, but Diogo Jota leveled up during the stoppage time. The atmosphere in the squad isn't good as before, while the players confidence is lower. To be worse, Arne Slot has enormous issues, particularly in defense. Both recognized left backs are unavailable. Andy Robertson is suspended, while Kostas Tsimikas is out injured. That's not all as centre-back Ibrahima Konate is also sidelined through injury. Right back Conor Bradley remain sidelined for the Reds, so Slot's ability to rotate in defense is severely restricted. Van Dijk is desperate for rest, he will most likely start again.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool won 3:2 at St Mary's last month in a league fixture. They are favorites again, but the Saints will try to upset them. Southampton have just been smashed by Tottenham and have lost their manager in Russell Martin, so their players have a point to prove. New interim coach Rusk will ask the maximum from his players, but the upcoming fixture against Fulham is definitely more important. Slot has big problems in defense as Konate, Tsimikas and Bradley are all out injured, while Robertson is suspended. And something very important, Van Dijk need some rest. I expect Liverpool to concede, so I think this will be a high scoring match with at least four goals.

Southampton vs Liverpool Pick: Over 3.5 goals @ 2.05 with Pinnacle
